Catnip is a natural feline tonic. In nature, cats eat wild catnip two or three times every week to aid their digestion. If your cat seems 'off its feed', sprinkle a little on its food.
What is it about catnip that drives your cat crazy? There is a chemical in catnip that triggers the excited reaction in cats. Young kittens and older cats do not respond as much, or at all to catnip. Also, 10 to 30% of the cat population does not respond to catnip at all, at any age. This has to do with genetics and heredity.
Save your furniture! Rub catnip on a scratching post to train your pet where to scratch and save your furniture!
For the freshest catnip for your cat you can grow your own plants. Catnip can be grown indoors or outdoors, just remember to keep it out of your cat's reach or you won't have much to show for your efforts! You can get catnip seeds in a kit or at your local nursery. There really isn't much to growing catnip--a sunny spot and some water. It grows wild so there really isn't any need to fuss over it. We grow catnip every summer. At first we just planted a container, but that was not enough to last until the next growing season. Now we grow it in window boxes. It is not unusual to see stray cats and raccoons nibbling or sleeping in those window boxes at any given time! That is the price we pay, and it is entertaining!
For convenience, we offer loose commercially grown and packaged catnip. Our favorite commercial brand is Cosmic Catnip--the cats just love it. We have Cosmic Catnip Bubbles (that's right, blow bubbles for your cats), catnip mice and other toys, catnip scratching posts, as well as catnip-laced treats.
